Week 3 - Tips for listening and reading

Listening part 1
  • You listen to 3 extracts with 2 questions per extract.
  • During the preparation time underline key information in the question and then quickly read the answers
  • Concentrate on both questions as you listen as they may not be in order
  • After you hear the first recording choose an answer even if you are not sure then correct it afterwards.
Listening part 2
  • Quickly read the introduction to familiarise yourself with the context
  • Before you listen make guesses for each gap: place, person, length of time etc.
  • The answers are in order so try to anticipate the next answer each time.
  • The text in front of you is paraphrased but the answers you use are exactly the same as those in the recording.
  • Important:  Make sure that your answers are grammatically correct in the context of the sentence. Check plurals, articles, tenses etc.

Use of English and Reading part 5
  •       Each answer is worth 2 marks
  •       Multiple choice questions with four answers
  •       Reading the question stems first and underline important information
  •       Read the text quickly the first time but pay attention to the the parts of the text that go with the question stems
  •       Eliminate obviously incorrect answers first
  •       Be careful with the incomplete sentences. The whole sentence must match the text.
  •       Make sure you can justify each answer
